Connie Rae Barnes, age 66, of Eden Prairie, MN passed away Sunday, March 24, 2019 at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina after a long courageous battle with cancer. Connie was born September 9, 1952 in Norman County, MN to Oscar and Ilene (Deinhart) Sorenson. She attended school in Borup, MN and received her teaching degree at Moorhead State University. On June 2, 1973 Connie married her husband of 45 years, Butch Barnes in Borup, MN. In the fall of 1973 they moved to Granite Falls, MN where she taught Special Education at Bert Raney Elementary until they moved to Marshall, MN in 1977 where she taught at Holy Redeemer and then took a position with the Reading Recovery program in the Marshall Public Schools.

In October 1977 they were blessed with a daughter, Brandie Joy and a son, Austin Joseph was born in May 1981. In the summer of 2004 Butch and Connie moved to Parker, CO for four years before permanently returning to Minnesota and settling in Eden Prairie. Connie was an active member of Transfiguration Lutheran Church in Bloomington, thoroughly enjoying her time with the knitting circle.

Connie had the gift of making everyone feel special. She was a great friend to many, of all generations. Connie’s love of people ranged everywhere from reading books with children to visiting elderly friends in nursing homes. She especially loved being in attendance at all the events her great nieces and nephews were involved in. Her love for family and friends was always evident in her cooking and special meals prepared on request for each particular person on their special occasion.

Survivors include her two children, Brandie and Austin, both of the Twin Cities and her husband, Butch Barnes of Eden Prairie. She is also survived by her two brothers, Jerry Sorenson of Cedar Point, MN and Steven (Marsha) Sorenson of Ottertail, MN; brother-in-law, Larry Kappes of Lake Nebagamon, WI; nephews and nieces, Nikki Sorenson Omaha NE, Jerod (Angie) Kappes, South Range, WI, Jason (Lisa Anderson) Sorenson, Blaine, MN, Tara (John) Burmood, New Richmond, WI, Corey (Trish) Sorenson, West Fargo, ND; 11 great nieces and nephews; and one great great nephew. Preceding her in death were her parents, Oscar and Ilene Sorenson; and sister, Jan Kappes.
